Tuakau was established in 1840, close to the banks of the Waikato River. Over 6,000 people living there (6,594 – Census March 2013) – up by more than 500 on the last Census. This higher than average growth rate could see the population almost double by 2031. Being near the Waikato Expressway is a key advantage in relation to the town’s development. The Expressway is the major four-lane state highway roading network linking Auckland to Hamilton and further south.
The town has rural outlooks and a great outdoor environment. Tuakau enjoys a slower pace of life with proximity to larger centres, with relatively short travel times to Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga. The seaside city of Tauranga is just two hours’ drive to the east while Hamilton, New Zealand’s largest inland city, is only 60 minutes south.
Tuakau is becoming increasingly popular as a place to live and a place to work or do business in, with a number of infrastructural improvements planned for the town to cope with growth, in relation to both residential and industrial zones and available land.
