Tamahere

The Tamahere community lies on the outskirts of Hamilton, right on the city’s south-eastern doorstep. It’s a high growth area right near the new Waikato Expressway, an important transport link which runs from Cambridge in the south to the Bombay Hills in the north. 

Over 6,000 people live in the Tamahere/Tauwhare areas (6,126 – Census March 2013), which has evolved from a farming area to a combination of smaller intensive horticultural and lifestyle blocks. Development pressures from the city’s boundaries into this adjoining catchment have led to challenges to provide sufficient infrastructure to support ongoing growth. 

The ‘Future Proof’ partnership is one approach dealing with this and the ongoing development of the Waikato Expressway through to Cambridge is also making this area more attractive to live in for those working in Hamilton or Cambridge. The Expressway is the major four-lane state highway roading network linking Auckland to Hamilton and further south and it runs directly through the centre of Tamahere.
