Service connections

Find out how to apply for a new water connection, or how to have your current water connection changed, moved or disconnected. Use the checklist below to help you apply.

If you are planning to build a new home and require a water connection, it’s a good idea to seek advice from a drainlayer, architect, engineer or other qualified person. They will know the requirements and standards you must comply with.

If you are proposing to build within five meters of a existing drinking water, wastewater or stormwater networks, you will need to complete and submit a build over application. Find out more here.

New water connection

If your property falls within the council reticulated water supply area, you can apply for a up to three standard 20mm water connections.

If you require four or more connections and/or are over the 20mm in size the connections will need to be installed privately by the owner/agent as part of the consent process.

What is the process?

Application process

  1. your application will be reviewed within 10 working days
  2. an invoice will be issued
  3. the application will remains open for 20 working days
  4.  if you have not paid within 20 working days, the application will lapse and you will have to reapply

Installation process

  1. the installation process begins once the invoice is paid in full
  2. installation will take place between 20 to 20 working days from payment and for a standard connection (no drilling or traffic management)
  3. Delays may occur if there is any traffic management in the area or if our contractors are required elsewhere for emergency work.
What is the cost?

There are two potential charges associated with connection to our water supply network:

  1. A connection fee of $1,641.08 (for 20mm urban residential/rural metered) or $2,953.31 (for 20mm urban residential/rural metered State Highways) and/or
  2. A development contribution, you can find the current fees and charges here.

Water consumption charge is currently charged at $2.18 per m³. The water supply is charged in two parts:

  1. Fixed Targeted Rate and
  2. Water Consumption invoices are read and sent every six months.

New stormwater connection

Connections to the stormwater network can be done by a drainlayer, that holds a NZ Certificate in Infrastructure Works Level 4 in the wastewater and stormwater strand. Otherwise, a qualified drainlayer with an equivalent qualification for working on wastewater or storm water assets.

New wastewater connection

Applications for residential standard connections to connect to gravity mains must be accompanied by an application for building consent and installation completed by a qualified drainlayer as per approved engineering plans.

Low pressure wastewater connection

Waikato District Council has four low pressure wastewater areas in Pookeno, Tauwhare Paa, Te Oohaki Road and Whaanga Coast 

If you are eligible for a Boundary Kit, you can apply for Council to complete installation. Acceptance will confirm ability, cost and location of a connection at the property boundary.  

The property owner will be responsible for all works on the private side of the property boundary, including: 

  • Installing an approved Low pressure pump station  
  • Decommissioning of an existing septic tank, if applicable

You can apply for this connection here, this is to be accompanied by a building consent. All installations are to be completed by a qualified NZ Certificate in Infrastructure Works Level 4 drain layer as per approved engineering plans.  

What is the application process?
  1. Complete the work as specified in the approved building plans, the application for connection to wastewater scheme and pre-network connection checklist
  2. We will review and we will send you an email. This may take up to 10 working days.
  3. When you have approval, you will need to  notify us by emailing two working days before carrying out the connection. If we have planned works or urgent unplanned works, we reserve the right to cancel or reschedule your job
  4. Notify us again within one working day that the job is complete
