Waikato district homeowners receive their rates notice next week

Homeowners in the Waikato district can expect to receive their rates assessment, and first rates instalment notice from Tuesday 6 August 2024.This is for the 2024/25 financial year and includes the latest QV property valuations and the 2024/25 rates increases.

Waikato District Mayor Jacqui Church says the Council listened to community feedback through the Enhanced Annual Plan process earlier this year about proposed general rate increase and worked hard to lower this figure.

“Rates are essential in keeping our Waikato district running smoothly” Mayor Jacqui explains. “They help fund a wide range of community services, facilities, wellbeing projects and initiatives that benefit us all, helping to create liveable, thriving, and connected communities.”

As a Council, we do our best to keep rate increases to a minimum, helping to ensure the financial wellbeing of our communities while still delivering essential services. Some of these key services we provide include the collection and disposal of rubbish and recycling, providing clean drinking water, improving access to green open spaces, maintaining roads, cycleways and footpaths, and more.

Rates, which are a tax, are applied to a property based on a number of factors such as capital value, land use, property type and location.

The Waikato District Council sets two types of rates: general rates, paid by all ratepayers, and targeted rates, paid by specific groups receiving particular services or facilities like the Whatawhata community hall.

“We understand rates can be confusing. That’s why we’ve put together a range of resources to help simplify the process. We want our communities to feel confident about how their rates money is being used and see how we’re all working together to make our district a better place,” says Mayor Jacqui.

To provide extra support, the Council offer flexible and hassle-free payment plans to help spread costs throughout the year. Also, the rates rebate schedule is available to help pay a portion of rates if you’re eligible.

“We have a team on hand to help homeowners set up direct debit payments, payment plans and learn more about the rates rebate scheme,” Mayor Jacqui adds.
