Waikato District Council recently launched a new composting hub in Huntly as part of its efforts to maximise resource recovery in the district.
This initiative, done in partnership with the Maaori not-for-profit organisation working towards zero waste, Para Kore, will enable the community to manage its organic waste more efficiently and contribute towards the district's sustainability goals.
Mayor Jacqui Church, and Huntly Ward Councillor, David Whyte applauded Council's and Pare Kore’s efforts in engaging various stakeholder groups to minimise food waste and maximise resource recovery at the launch event.
Council Waste Minimisation Office Ogechi Okoro said this approach is considered a temporary measure to address a long-term problem.
“Our ultimate objective is to reduce food waste to the bare minimum, given the pressing need for environmental sustainability, and rising living costs,” he said.
“This initiative is a positive step towards a greener and more sustainable community.”
The composting hub is at Kaahui Tuuwaa Maara Kai, 159 Harris Street, and anyone in the local community can use it.
