Tamahere residents and visitors now have a place to charge their electric vehicles less than a minute’s drive from the nearby Waikato Expressway on and off ramps.
That place is Tamahere Park, on Wiremu Tamihana Drive, which also offers a destination with cafes, shops, a pharmacy, medical centre, supermarket, playground, skatepark, accessible public restrooms, cycling and walking tracks for drivers to enjoy while topping up their cars.
The EV charging station represents a key step in realising Tamahere's vision for a vibrant community with sustainable and modern amenities.
“The EV charging station is another milestone in the realisation of a long-held vision of the Tamahere community, working with Council, to build a genuine heart for Tamahere in keeping with its country living values,” says Tamahere-Woodlands General Ward Councillor, Crystal Beavis.
The area is also home to the Waikato District Council Tamahere Council and Community Space, offering access to council services, free Wi-Fi, public meeting rooms, and hot desks.
Tamahere village has undergone huge development in the past five years, and local councillors and community committee members are thrilled with the results.
“The successful development of the Tamahere village centre has been a key project championed by the Tamahere Community Committee working with the Waikato District Council,” says Tamahere Community Committee chairperson, Charles Fletcher.
“A key component of our vision for the village includes the Te Awa Cycleway, bus bays and provision for EV chargers and CCTV. After several years of planning, we are delighted to see the implementation of the EV charge station at Tamahere.”
With the opening of the Waikato Expressway in 2022, Tamahere is an appealing landing place for visitors.
“This charging station enhances Tamahere as a destination which draws people from far and wide to its superb local amenities, including a modern community centre and recreation facilities, and to the regionally renowned Tamahere Country Market run by St. Stephen’s Anglican Church,” says Councillor Beavis.
“Visitors and locals alike comment on the lovely atmosphere in Tamahere, so it’s great to add such a useful feature to help improve the village experience.”
The addition of the new charging station would not have been possible without Waikato District Council’s partnership with ChargeNet, the company behind the installation.
The charging station is now live and available for use. You can find it opposite the playground and skatepark. There are two 75kW charging stations, which offer four charging points.
