People interested in leading Waikato district for the next three years can officially put their hats in the ring, with local election candidate nominations now open.
If you want to make a difference to your local community, then now is the time for you to put your name forward. Nominations will be open for the next four weeks to noon, Friday 12 August 2022.
With long-term Waikato District Mayor Allan Sanson stepping down, Waikato District Council is seeking someone to fill his shoes, plus there’s an opportunity to put your name forward for two brand-new Maaori wards and reshaped community boards across the district.
“There’s no better time to get involved with local democracy in the Waikato district than right now,” says Council Chief Executive Gavin Ion.
“Whether you are keen to stand for councillor, community board, or go the full nine yards and put your name forward for mayor, there’s an opportunity to make a real difference and help lead Waikato district into a representative and inclusive future.”
To stand as an elected member, candidates must be a New Zealand citizen, enrolled as a Parliamentary elector and must be nominated by two electors whose names appear on the electoral roll within the respective ward the candidate is standing for.
“We have a diverse community and hence we need elected members that understand and can represent many different perspectives, ages and ethnicities,” adds Mr. Ion.
“But before you put your hat in the ring and embark on a campaign, make sure you are clued up with the rules and legislation around campaign signage, social media and how much you can spend, and don’t wait until the last minute to put your name forward!”
Waikato District Council held four candidate information evenings at the end of June, to help potential candidates learn more about what it means to be an elected member, the electoral process and to ask questions. A recording of the online event, alongside other valuable resources and guidance for those considering standing, can be found on the Council website.
Nominations close at noon, Friday 12 August 2022. Nomination forms can be collected from Council’s Ngāruawāhia, Huntly, Raglan, Tamahere, Te Kauwhata and Tuakau offices, by phoning 0800 922 822, or via the Waikato District Council website.
