North Waikato residents will benefit from a new refuse and recycling drop-off facility opening in Tuakau later this month.
This compensates for the closure of a privately-run recycling drop-off service in Pukekohe in early 2016 which took both Council and the community by surprise.
Waikato District Council has teamed up with Smart Environmental to open the new facility located at 100c Industry Lane, Tuakau. The facility opens on 20 February.
The Smart Environmental Yard will be open to the public 6 days a week, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 3pm, for the free drop-off of domestic volumes of recycling as well as pre-paid stickered bag refuse drop-off.
Businesses will be able to drop off commercial volumes of recycling, but a charge will apply and will be set by Smart Environmental.
Due to the introduction of the Tuakau facility, monthly collections at Pukekawa, Onewhero and Glen Murray come to an end this month.
The last monthly drop-offs for Pukekawa and Glen Murray residents were held this Waitangi weekend and Onewhero’s final drop-off will be held on Saturday 11 February at the Onewhero Rugby Club from 8.30am-noon.
Waikato District Council General Manager Service Delivery, Tim Harty says the new service brings greater flexibility to rural residents in the northern part of the Waikato district.
“While we acknowledge that it may be further to drive for residents in the Pukekawa, Glen Murray and Onewhero areas, they will now be able to drop off their refuse and recycling in Tuakau on any one of six days a week rather than just once a month,” says Mr Harty.
“This gets us back to the type of service the residents of the area were used to, prior to the closure of the privately-run service in Pukekohe.”
Residents are asked to follow the signage instructions when entering and exiting the Tuakau site and children are asked to remain in cars at all times while recycling and refuse is dropped off.
