With summer weather around the corner and the festive season well underway, Waikato District Council is keen for ‘the season of good cheer’ to remain just that with a reminder of its regular and holiday season liquor bans.
“Liquor bans, which control when and where alcohol may be drunk in defined areas, were put in place by our communities several years ago to protect the public, and to support the police as well as people’s enjoyment,” says Sue Duignan, General Manager of Customer Support.
Regular bans are in place year round in the centres of many of the district’s towns –Huntly, Meremere, Ngaruawahia, Taupiri, Te Kauwhata and Tuakau. These bans remain unchanged over the Christmas – New Year period.
However, in Raglan over the busy summer period the usual central township ’no liquor’ area is extended to a large surrounding area from 23 December to 6 January.
There are also permanent bans in place at Port Waikato’s Sunset Beach, and further north at Karioitahi Beach.
“We want people to drink responsibly. We also want our towns and beaches to be safe, enjoyable places for families, where people can have a good time and avoid either having their favourite tipple tipped out or worse still picking up a $250 fine,” Mrs Duignan says.
