The nationally renowned ‘Nappy Lady’, Kate Meads, is coming to the Waikato district this month for the first time and will be running her popular waste free parenting workshop.
Ms Meads is visiting Huntly and Meremere in late July to hold workshops for parents who want to make responsible choices in reducing their waste output.
After recent changes to Waikato district residents’ refuse and recycling changes, supporting workshops like these are an important part of educating the wider community.
Council is also very enthusiastic about waste minimisation in the district. Service Delivery General Manager, Tim Harty says Council wants to see less going into landfills as it would benefit the whole district.
“As a district we’ve made some changes recently aimed at changing behaviours to reduce waste and our communities saving more because they’re sending less to landfill,” Mr Harty says. “We know we can make a difference to what goes in our landfills by making smarter choices around parenting, so we are really happy to have Kate visit.”
Ms Meads said her waste free parenting workshops are about minimising families’ ecological impact and introducing the community to exciting and modern waste free alternatives to expensive disposable products. At the workshops, parents and parents-to-be receive tips and information on what they can do at home to reduce their waste output. “Cloth nappies are part of what we promote through our education, but the workshop is about so much more than nappies,” she says.
Ms Meads said there had been huge interest in the workshops all over the country. She has run her programme through 35 councils in New Zealand. “I am so excited that the waste free parenting initiatives all over the country are having such a positive impact on Kiwi parents,” she said. “It is fantastic to be able to bring the programme to Waikato district families with the support of Waikato District Council.”
The workshops will be held at:
- Meremere Hall on Thursday, 28 July from 6pm-8.30pm
- Huntly West School on Friday, 29 July from 9.30am-12 noon
