The Homework Programme will be trialled at Ngaruawahia over five weeks.
Youth Week is held 21-29 May. It is coordinated by Ara Taiohi, with the support of the Ministry of Youth Development. This year's theme is about giving, and supporting young people to achieve their dreams.
“We want to support the young people in our district to succeed,” Waikato District Council Acting General Manager Customer Support, Roger MacCulloch says. “We know young people need to be able to concentrate on their homework and study, and sometimes it’s difficult finding an environment where that’s possible. Sometimes it’s easier for young people to study in a place where others are also studying and where there aren’t as many distractions.”
The Homework Programme will be launched at Ngaruawahia Library on Wednesday 25 May, at an event from 2pm to 4.30pm. There will be some entertainment on the day.
The event coincides with the introduction of tablets at Ngaruawahia Library. The tablets have been loaded with selected apps including TED talks, Khan Academy and the New Zealand Herald and are in addition to the computers already available at Ngaruawahia Library.
The Council recently introduced the tablets at Te Kauwhata Library and Raglan Library and is hoping to introduce tablets into the other Waikato District Libraries later this year.
