Partnership approach will address potential erosion

A multi-agency and community partnership approach will be employed to address potential erosion issues identified at Sunset Beach, Port Waikato.

Last year, Waikato District Council commissioned a consultant to report on potential erosion issues in the area after the local community board expressed concerns regarding damage to public assets.

Service Delivery General Manager, Tim Harty says the GHD report highlights likely ongoing erosion and potential implications for assets and properties in the future, and recommends a multi-agency approach between Waikato District Council, Waikato Regional Council and Department of Conservation to support the community.

Mr Harty says the report is being shared with potential affected property owners.

“We’ve already spoken to, or met with, property owners on the immediate beach area to ensure they’re aware of the report and understand the information it contains. Our next step is to meet with the wider community, iwi and beach users to determine a holistic approach. We all need to be comfortable with the solutions and strategy we put in place to manage this situation.

“Erosion is a natural occurrence in coastal areas and Sunset Beach is a constantly changing environment with dynamic natural processes shaping the beach and adjacent land. The difference will be how we work with, or manage, the natural phenomena for the future. That’s why a multi-agency approach working with the community is the best way forward.

Mr Harty says access to the beach and carpark are still available however the changing environment could mean they’re also affected in future.

“A number of steps have already been put in place to address any safety concerns including ongoing maintenance, fencing, signage and new carparks. However beaches are dynamic environments so caution is advised regardless of any erosion issues. We’re continuing to work with the community to provide information on the best and safest access routes enabling us to enjoy this fabulous asset in the district.”
